The focus for Michigan State football this weekend has been firmly on Spartan Dawg Con. The event is as massive as can be with countless players and over 100 former Spartans in attendance. Even legend Mark Dantonio is making an appearance as well.

But with all the attention on the event, Jonathan Smith was still able to work his magic in the 2025 class and earn a commitment from his highest ranked recruit so far.

LaRue Zamorano is a four-star defensive back in the 2025 class. Hailing from Corona, Calif., Zamorano is the No. 245 player in the country according to Rivals. This makes him the highest-ranked commit in the Smith era at Michigan State so far.

Zamorano is also the No. 22 player in the country at his position and the No. 23 player from California as well.

This was a very interesting recruitment to follow as Zamorano wasn’t also trending to Michigan State. The Spartans began receiving official predictions to win this recruitment about a week ago, but until that point most thought Washington was the team to beat.

But Smith was able to turn the tides in a hurry and beat out a west coast school for the West Coast product which isn’t an easy thing to do.

Michigan State’s 2025 class now sits at No. 51 in the country according to 247Sports after his commitment. This isn’t where we want MSU to be by any means, but it’s a solid foundation for Smith’s first class all things considered.

Smith is getting closer to wrapping up his first recruiting class as the 2025 class now sits at 16 commits. There will undoubtedly be a few more to come in the future, but it is nice to be sitting at a solid total at this point in the offseason.

But if the past has told us anything, I wouldn’t be surprised for Michigan State to earn another commitment soon.
