Is it time to panic about Michigan State basketball’s 2025 recruiting class?

Can Tom Izzo right the ship of the 2025 recruiting class?

In case you missed the news earlier on Thursday, Michigan State basketball was shockingly excluded from the top three of five-star in-state recruit Trey McKenney.

McKenney had been one of Tom Izzo’s highest priorities in this class, so I never would have guessed MSU wouldn’t even make his top three. But that’s the reality of MSU’s situation so now they need to pivot to other targets.

However, some of those other targets that Michigan State has prioritized are now off Izzo’s recruiting board as well. Top prospects Jalen Haralson and Trent Sisley have both committed elsewhere in the last couple days to Notre Dame and Indiana. Now while missing out on those two guys wasn’t as surprising it is frustrating to miss out on three targets within a matter of days.

With all of these recent misses however, is it time to hit the panic button?

I know as a massive Michigan State fan I’m very biased, but I don’t think we’re quite at the level where we need to panic quite yet. For starters there are a lot of names out there that Izzo and his staff are still heavily pursuing. Five-star Dwayne Aristode just put MSU in his top 5 and is someone I think the Spartans have a great chance with -- although a recent update says otherwise.

Four-stars Davion Hannah and Jordan Scott are names to keep an eye on as well as five-star Niko Bundalo. I’d be shocked if the Spartans don’t end up with at least one of these four players and there’s probably a solid chance at getting at least two as well.

Another reason why it isn’t time to panic is because Izzo can always fall back on the transfer portal. I know that’s a scary thing to read because of Izzo’s flat out refusal to use the portal at times, but Izzo has proven to be effective when he does choose to. Tyson Walker and Joey Hauser are two prime recent examples of Izzo knocking the ball out of the park with transfers, so if Izzo’s forced to use the portal I trust he’ll make the right call.

And who knows, maybe Izzo and his staff will get involved with a recruit that we haven’t even heard about yet.

So while the last few days have not gone Michigan State’s way I believe we are extremely far from needing to hit the panic button. At the end of the day Izzo is one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time, so let’s sit back and see how this plays out for a little longer before we pass too much judgement.
