The third time’s the charm. That cliche rings true for Pat Fitzgerald and Michigan State football which received its third commitment of the weekend on Saturday night in the form of a priority target.

Let’s flash back to Friday night first. Michigan State picked up a commitment from unranked Georgia cornerback Cordaro Parham whose announcement went viral on social media. He committed right in front of Fitzgerald in a room full of recruits and parents and the head coach was pumped.

On Saturday afternoon, he picked up another commitment. This time, it was his son, Brendan Fitzgerald, who chose the Spartans where he’ll join the program as a walk-on receiver.

And finally, on Saturday night, three-star edge rushing target Lawrence Kanneh picked Michigan State over Virginia and Boise State. His offer sheet isn’t anything to write home about, but Kanneh is someone who I identified as a must-get target during official visit weekend No. 2. Fitzgerald and Co. closed the deal, landing the Columbus, Ohio, product.

With the commitment of Kanneh, Michigan State has now had a commitment in four straight days. It started with Matthew Brady on June 3, Henry Sakalas on June 4, Parham on June 5, and now Fitzgerald’s son and Kanneh on June 6. There’s also a good chance that June 7 yields another commitment, as teased by Fitzgerald on Twitter.

Michigan State’s recruiting class is now up to 11 commits and it’s ranked just 41st nationally, but I expect it to finish somewhere in the 30-40 range by the end of the cycle.

Kanneh is ranked the No. 856 overall recruit and No. 71 edge in the class on 247Sports. He’s now the third defensive line commit in Michigan State’s 2027 class, joining three-star edge Jack Schuler and four-star defensive lineman Ohimai Ozolua.

Michigan State fans are getting caught star-gazing

Fitzgerald can’t be judged on his recruiting until year two, and I think that’s completely fair given the circumstances. Michigan State football is a tough product to sell right now to top recruits because it hasn’t made a bowl game since 2021 and the NFL draft also hasn’t been kind to the Spartans in recent years.

The new head coach is landing guys who he feels will build a strong foundation and the higher-ranked classes will come when wins start rolling in.

Winning cures all and we’ll soon find out just how important it truly is.

If Fitzgerald can get the Spartans back to a bowl game this season, exceeding expectations, I think we’ll start seeing top 25 classes rolling into East Lansing every year. There’s a long way to go for that, however. The staff is good enough to get the job done, but recruiting won’t pick up until that happens.
