Pat Fitzgerald signals that Michigan State football is on commit watch again

Could Michigan State’s 2027 class grow by one?

Official visits haven’t even kicked off yet and first-year Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald is already picking up some steam on the recruiting trail.

Following the Spring Showcase about two weeks ago, Fitzgerald landed a transfer receiver who was going to immediately impact the corps with an injection of depth. That commitment happened just hours after the Spring Showcase.

Less than a week later, the Spartans landed four-star defensive lineman Ohimai Ozolua from Chicago over Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, Miami, and Penn State. Fitzgerald flexed his muscle and used Winston DeLattiboudere III’s sudden recruiting prowess to land the four-star prospect over some college football royalty.

A week after landing Ozolua, it looks like the Spartans are about to pick up another commitment.

According to Fitzgerald’s official X account, there’s a commitment on the way. Although he can’t come right out and say that because that’s a recruiting violation, he did post his now-famous “Pat Signal” which is a floating neon green Spartan head. Whenever he posts that, it means that a commitment is on the way.

Late on Wednesday night, the first-year head coach posted the floating Spartan head which means that we’re about to learn of a commitment as early as Thursday.

Michigan State’s 2027 class currently sits at six commitments, but it should soon be seven — yes, I’m assuming this is a 2027 commit and not 2028 based on nothing more than likelihood.

Michigan State’s 2027 class is shaping up nicely

Fitzgerald’s first recruiting class is currently ranked No. 34 in the nation with six commitments but it’s likely to be on the move — in the right direction — soon.

The class just landed its first four-star in Ozolua last week and it’s addressed some needs along the offensive line, in the backfield, and in the defensive backfield. I can see more four-stars in the near future, especially with how well DeLattiboudere III is recruiting lately.

Fitzgerald is at a disadvantage here because he’s taking over a program that hasn’t made a bowl game since 2021 and all he has to sell these recruits is history mixed with hope.

If he’s recruiting like this before he’s winning any games, I’d like to imagine that he’ll be putting together top 25 classes regularly when he does get Michigan State back to the postseason.
