It’s summer so that means recruiting is dominating pretty much every Michigan State football headline and fans are eager to see how Pat Fitzgerald does in his first full cycle.
So far, he has the No. 42 class in 2027 which isn’t exactly ideal, but he’s still working on other top targets with official visits stretching through the weekend of June 19. He’s also landed six commitments over the past week, pushing the class total up to 13.
One of the top targets was supposed to take a visit in the coming weeks, but he’s scheduled his commitment announcement for Wednesday, June 10.
Four-star offensive tackle Dominic Black was supposed to visit on June 12, but he’s committing on Wednesday and deciding between five teams: Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and Michigan State. The Spartans locked in an official visit with him back in the spring and they were looked at as a threat to swipe him from Ohio State’s backyard.
Unfortunately, it looks like the Spartans are losing ground ahead of Wednesday’s commitment announcement. A 247Sports recruiting insider recently placed a crystal ball for the Wildcats to land the four-star offensive tackle from New Madison, Ohio.
Black already visited Indiana last month but it looks like Kentucky has made a strong push here at the finish line for the No. 126 recruit in the nation. Ohio’s fifth-best prospect looks to be headed to Kentucky or Indiana with Michigan State firmly behind with Tennessee and Virginia Tech. It looks to be a tough miss, but it’s nice to be in these recruitments again (yay, more moral victories).
Michigan State has its sights set on a couple of other OL targets
Michigan State got a visit from four-star offensive tackle Caleb Johnson a couple of weekends ago and he has one left on his schedule with Missouri. He’s probably going to make a decision between Indiana, Michigan State, Iowa, and Missouri within the next few weeks and I’d like to think the Spartans have a fighting chance. Unfortunately, I’d guess that home-state Indiana takes this one.
There is another offensive line target who caught the staff’s attention and visited last weekend and that’s Corey Laga. Pat Fitzgerald reposted his Michigan State visit pictures, showing that he’s clearly a top priority for the staff. He’s a guy who could end up as a four-star by the end of the cycle.
Laga is the No. 438 recruit in the class. He has one more visit remaining with Vanderbilt and he visited Oklahoma before Michigan State so it’ll likely be down to those three programs.
Nick Tabacca and Fitzgerald will have options even if they miss on Black, which looks to be the case.
