Pat Fitzgerald, Michigan State find hidden gem in new WR commit from Texas

The Spartans may have found a future four-star.

Michigan State stayed busy over the weekend as another crop of 2027 recruits made their way to campus for official visits and Pat Fitzgerald secured another handful of commitments.

The weekend kicked off with now-three-star cornerback Cordaro Parham from Texas committing to the Spartans in front of Fitzgerald in a viral moment. The head coach threw his arms up in celebration, not exactly expecting a commitment on day one of the weekend.

Following the Parham commitment on Friday, the Spartans picked up two more on Saturday from Fitzgerald’s son, Brendan Fitzgerald, who will be walking on as a receiver and three-star edge rusher Lawrence Kanneh from Ohio. The weekend got off to a roaring start just days after landing three-star linebackers Matthew Brady and Henry Sakalas.

On Sunday, Fitzgerald teased two more commitments. They both announced on Sunday night while most of us were asleep.

Three-star tight end Ryan Pankey committed as well as unranked receiver Zach Forbish from Frisco, Texas. The latter might just end up being the biggest hidden gem in the 2027 class.

Although he’s currently unranked, I expect that to change in the near future, especially since he just led Texas’ runner-up with 41 catches for 820 yards and 12 touchdowns, according to his 247Sports profile.

It’s hard to see a 6-foot-3, 193-pound receiver who plays for one of the best teams in the talent-rich state of Texas finishing with almost 1,000 yards in a state runner-up season being unranked for long.

In my opinion, Forbish is going to be one of the biggest risers in the class and I wouldn’t be all that shocked to see other Power Four teams make a run at him when he does receive his first recruiting ranking. He’s currently flying under the radar, but it’s only a matter of time before that changes.

Pitt and Wisconsin were also lobbying for him before his Spartan commitment.

Courtney Hawkins got himself another good one

If there’s one position group that has been consistently solid even through the dark years of Mel Tucker and Jonathan Smith, it’s wide receiver.

Courtney Hawkins has landed talent and he’s proven to be excellent at developing it. He’s turned Jayden Reed and Jalen Nailor into NFL players and the same could be said for Keon Coleman. He also had a helping hand in Ricky White’s journey, he coached Germie Bernard for a year, and future NFL wideout Nick Marsh got to learn under him for two years.

Now Hawkins has some young receivers coming down the pipe in Zach Washington, Braylon Collier, Bryson Williams, Samson Gash, and now Forbish.

I like the direction that this receiving corps is headed.
