It’s been a busy month for a couple of Michigan State basketball signees as they push for spots on the USA Men’s U18 National Team.

Fortunately, both have made the second-to-last round of cuts over the weekend.

Team USA is tasked with trimming its roster down from 32 to 12 before the FIBA U18 AmeriCup which will take place from June 1-7 in Mexico. That’s not an easy task considering all 32 players who were trying out for the team are good enough to make it.

Well, both Spartan signees stood out in the first round of cuts, making the final 19 before the last round of cuts will trim the roster to 12. Ethan Taylor and Jasiah Jervis are one step closer to being named to Team USA’s U18 roster which will represent the country at the AmeriCup in 1.5 weeks.

Jervis isn’t a huge surprise but given the fact that Taylor had a quiet senior season at Link Academy as fellow Spartan signee Carlos Medlock Jr.‘a teammate, this is a great sign that he’s growing into his own. Maybe he just needed a fresh start and this U18 tryout was seemingly perfect for him.

Taylor is a four-star center in the class and he’s ranked in the top 50 nationally, but he was once a five-star recruit. His drop in the rankings has been unfortunate, but this makes up for it.

Now both are one step closer to making that final 12-man roster. Could you imagine if Michigan State signees made up one-sixth of the Team USA roster at the FIBA AmeriCup? Winning that tournament would signify immediate impacts on the horizon for the two incoming freshmen — more so than is expected already.

Judging by a recent ranking of the top 30 NBA draft prospects for 2027, Jervis is already expected to have a huge impact as a true freshman.

Taylor is still trying to prove himself.

Michigan State’s incoming class is going to be special

We already know what the Spartans have in Jervis (an elite shooting guard who can score at all three levels) and Taylor is still coming into his own but he also has elite potential, but we can’t forget that Medlock and Julius Avent are joining them.

The Spartans’ 2026 class could be the best that Tom Izzo has landed in a decade, but I’ll be safe and just say the best since 2023 which featured Jeremy Fears, Xavier Booker, Coen Carr, and Gehrig Normand. I will say that it’s likely to finish better than that one considering Booker and Normand have already transferred away but a lot is riding on the growth of Taylor, Medlock, and Avent.

Jervis is considered by many as a college-ready two-guard, Taylor has legitimate Big Ten-starting center potential, Avent is flying under the radar, and I’ve seen college hoops experts say that Medlock is a future NBA point guard.

The future is bright in East Lansing and it might feature two Team USA members.
