It took a minute, but Tom Izzo finally landed his first commitment in the 2026 class in four-star point guard Carlos Medlock Jr. on Friday evening.

This was a recruitment that heated up in the Spartans' favor in a hurry. Michigan State offered him earlier this summer before he blew up this summer and recently stood out at the Adidas 3SSB Circuit, averaging over 21 points per game at the event with Izzo in attendance.

Then, on Thursday, Justin Thind of 247Sports reported that Medlock Jr. would be visiting Michigan State officially for Grind Week on Sept. 5 which could lead to his commitment.

Well, on Friday, he wasted no time and committed to Izzo and the Spartans, becoming the first pledge in Michigan State's 2026 class. This is honestly the perfect start to the class as Izzo now has his future point guard and leader, and now he can help recruit other targets to join him -- especially to Grind Week.

The news of his commitment was rather sudden and surprising on Friday afternoon because most expected him to wait until his visit to make it official, but he couldn't wait.

Medlock even posted the video of him telling Izzo the good news.

"I know you're looking at point guards, but I'm just here to tell you that you ain't gotta look at point guards. I'm coming to be a Spartan."

We don't often get to see the behind-the-scenes commitments like this, especially with Izzo, so it was cool to see how happy everyone on the call was with the news. Izzo was thrilled to have his point guard of the future locked up and now he can focus on building around Medlock.

I have a feeling that this is going to go down as one of the most important commitments in recent memory.
