As spring ball nears closer, Michigan State football coach Pat Fitzgerald wants to shift his main focus to the current roster soon so he's been scheduling his summer official visits left and right.

While Fitzgerald will still be focusing on recruiting the 2027 class, it makes sense for him to get his summer official visit schedule set up now before his top targets don't have room for him. He's locking down some big-time visitors starting at the end of May, and I'd expect more to be announced soon.

One of the biggest official visitors to announce a date on Tuesday was Myles Smith.

The four-star Farmington, Mich., edge rusher will reportedly be on campus on May 29 as one of two official visits scheduled. His other visit is to Kentucky on June 12, per Allen Trieu.

Smith is one of the best recruits in the country and he's got Michigan State first up on his official visit schedule which has to count for something. According to 247Sports, Michigan State and Kentucky are the two teams currently "warm" for the four-star edge rusher.

Rivals has Smith ranked as the No. 47 recruit in the country in their updated rankings as well as the No. 2 prospect from Michigan. This is a big one, folks.

Pat Fitzgerald's official visit schedule is intriguing

As Fitzgerald continues to plan official visits with some of his top 2027 targets, one thing is becoming clear: he's not messing around. Fitzgerald is going after three top-65 recruits from the state of Michigan alone. You could argue he's targeting a fourth as well in Dakota Guerrant, but there's really no read on where he's leaning. That makes four top-65 in-state targets.

I know Mel Tucker liked to aim high, but he missed on a lot of those elite recruits. We're about to see if Fitzgerald can sell his vision for the program to these elite in-state guys and have different luck.

And this is Fitzgerald's first full recruiting class. If he recruits like this before Michigan State has any sort of success, I'm excited to see what he can do with the resources allotted when the Spartans are back to their winning and contending ways.

The future is (hopefully) bright in East Lansing.
