Just months after beating Michigan for Carlos Medlock Jr., Michigan State basketball lost out on a battle for priority four-star power forward Quinn Costello to the Wolverines.

The four-star big man committed to Michigan over the Spartans on Tuesday.

Costello was also considering Purdue and North Carolina.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great pick-up for Dusty May and the Wolverines, and it shows that they're not playing around on the recruiting trail. Tom Izzo wanted Costello, but the Massachusetts product finished his final visit to Michigan last weekend, and it was enough to win him over.

Two weeks ago, he was in East Lansing for 'Grind Week', which is when former players come back to work out with the current team, and it's a chance for Izzo to host priority targets for the event.

Izzo can be selective about who visits during Grind Week, and if you're chosen as a recruit, that means you're high up on the Hall of Famer's board. Costello was there with Medlock Jr. and Jasiah Jervis, but he wasn't impressed enough to commit to the Spartans. And that likely means he wouldn't have fit in with the Michigan State culture.

Jason Richardson recapped it best when Alabama was trying to land Jase Richardson, and the Tide let him visit East Lansing for Grind Week: they basically kissed him goodbye by letting him visit. If you have that 'Spartan Dawg' mentality, the thought is that Grind Week is the perfect event for you, and if you don't commit after being on campus for it, you're probably a better fit elsewhere.

We'll see if Jervis joins Medlock after that Grind Week visit, but right now, Izzo is 0-for-1.

Costello is a top-40 power forward with excellent range. He fits right into that 3-point shooting offense that Michigan loves from positions 1-5.

Izzo and May are also 1-1 against each other in recruiting in the 2026 cycle.
