Five-stars and Michigan State football are two phrases that don’t usually go hand-in-hand, but Pat Fitzgerald could be the coach to change that narrative.
That’s not going to happen in the 2027 recruiting class, but there’s a very real chance that he could land his first five-star in 2028.
I know it’s a long-shot, but the Spartans are in a really good spot with five-star in-state offensive tackle Antijuan Wilkes from Detroit Cass Tech. He “trimmed” his list to 12 earlier this summer and Michigan State made the cut along with every other major program that you could think of.
Seeing programs like Georgia, Miami, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, LSU, and Oregon didn’t exactly instill any hope within the Spartan fanbase. We’ve all seen this movie before: a five-star includes Michigan State in a top schools list, and maybe even visits, but a college football powerhouse swoops in and lands him.
This case might be a little different though.
Wilkes has been raving about Michigan State over the past couple of weeks and he’s been saying all the right things. He shared another quote on Friday that caught my attention and it might just have Spartan fans believing that Fitzgerald can land him.
Nation's top '28 OT Antijuan Wilkes updates Michigan State recruitment following summer visits…

”I love them.”
Hearing a five-star proclaim that he loves Michigan State is huge, especially with a new coaching staff in place. He also said that he could see himself playing for the Spartans which could just be recruitspeak (like coachspeak). The first part of his quote is what stands out.
Wilkes loves Michigan State. Will that be enough to lure him away from Big Ten and SEC powerhouses?
Michigan State fans are still scarred by David Stone
The last time a five-star had this much public love for Michigan State wasn’t all that long ago. David Stone is a name that Spartan fans are still trying to forget, especially since he’s now the top defensive lineman in the country, at least according to EA Sports College Football 27.
Stone was a five-star during the Mel Tucker era and it felt like the Spartans were going to defy the odds and land the talented defensive lineman from Oklahoma.
Instead, the five-star who called East Lansing his second home decided to stick with his first home, staying in Oklahoma to play for the Sooners. That crushed a lot of Spartan fans because of how much he hyped up Michigan State and represented them. He, too, said all the right things.
Until Wilkes commits and signs his NLI, Michigan State fans aren’t going to feel good about landing him. We can thank Stone for that.
