Pat Fitzgerald, Michigan State burned for another top DL target by Big Ten foe

Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald just wrapped up his first spring with Michigan State and first month of summer official visits in East Lansing and while his 2027 recruiting class is ranked just 51st nationally, it still has room for 5-10 more commits.

Fitzgerald can now be more selective with spots filling up.

It may explain why some perceived top targets have ended up elsewhere. Michigan State has missed on several top targets in the 2027 class who were supposed to officially visit but who canceled and committed elsewhere. Some misses hurt a little more than others and one painful swing-and-miss happened just last week.

Unranked defensive lineman Dallas Ward was just on campus a few weeks ago for an official visit and Michigan State was perceived as one of the leaders for him, but he also visited Minnesota and Rutgers, making this a Big Ten battle for him.

The Spartans were pushing hard for him but he just committed to a Big Ten foe last week after his final official visit.

And it was a familiar culprit. Rutgers beat Fitzgerald out for a top target once again. This is now the third time in which the Scarlet Knights were able to beat Michigan State out for a top 2027 target. Arnold Mugerwa, a three-star receiver, and fellow three-star wideout Isaiah Alvarez both committed to Rutgers after being top Michigan State targets.

Rutgers’ 2027 class is ranked 18 spots ahead of Michigan State’s after this latest commitment. I’d bet the two classes are very similar by the time the class is over.

Michigan State has limited spots left

Michigan State is up to 15 commitments in its 2027 class and that means that it’s filling up quickly and judging by the recent visit from three-star defensive lineman Amari Vickerson, Fitzgerald is already turning his attention toward Ward’s replacement on the recruiting big board.

Assuming Michigan State has 5-10 spots left in the class (probably closer to five than 10), I would assume that Vickerson is one of two final defensive line targets for Fitzgerald in the 2027 class along with three-star Cincinnati commit Zay’vion Smith.

There are still some four-star targets left and Fitzgerald will try to flip at least a couple of Power Four commits. The 2027 class may be ranked in the 50s, but it should finish somewhere in the 30-40 range.
