Now this is one thing I don’t think anyone saw coming.

Michigan State basketball is in the middle of a very tense recruiting season. Tom Izzo is after countless elite prospects in the 2025 class, and with that comes a lot of major competition. So it’s important for Michigan State to do whatever they have to do to get a leg up in their recruitments.

That was seen most recently with Michigan State’s top recruiting target in five-star guardTrey McKenney who was seen working out with a former Michigan State basketball legend.

McKenney has been one of Izzo’s top targets this entire recruiting cycle. Izzo has gone to watch McKenney play in person more times than I can count, and he even has an official visit coming up to Michigan State on Oct. 4.

I didn’t really expect to see any updates in McKenney’s recruitment until his visits began, but that’s because I never expected to see him working out with Michigan State legend Travis Walton.

Walton was a star at MSU from 2005-2009, winning Big Ten defensive player of the year in his senior season. He also helped Michigan State win one Big Ten championship and helped lead the Spartans to the 2009 National Championship game in his senior season.

Now I don’t know if Izzo had anything to do with McKenney working out with Walton or not, and if I had to guess I would say he probably did not. But this is still a big deal in my eyes.

At the very least it can’t hurt that McKenney is working out with someone from Michigan State, but I’d also bet that Walton made at least a comment or two about how McKenney should play in East Lansing. And when a former player of Walton’s caliber says something like that, I think McKenney will listen even a little.

As I mentioned before, I doubt we get any more substantial updates on McKenney’s recruitment until his visits begin, but this recent development has me even more hopeful that Michigan State will win this recruitment for the top-ranked player from Michigan.
