Completing 10-of-24 passes for just over 100 yards and two interceptions wasn't exactly what Aidan Chiles would consider a successful season opener.

Heck, it's not what any Michigan State football fan or coach wanted to see from Chiles.

But that didn't stop the young quarterback from keeping his head up in the post-game presser and speaking about how he takes full responsibility for the poor performance. He wasn't even all that bad -- the completion percentage looks worse than it should because of some drops (one that led to an interception) and the fact that he wasn't given a ton of time to throw.

Enough with the excuses, however. Chiles needs to be better.

Florida Atlantic head coach Tom Herman liked what he saw from the young Michigan State quarterback, however. He praised Chiles and said that Michigan State has "something special" with him at quarterback.

Herman is a brilliant offensive mind dating back to his days at Ohio State so for him to say this is actually a massive compliment. He's seen some pretty good quarterback play during his time as a head coach and offensive coordinator so if he thinks Chiles is special, there's a good chance that we all need to relax about that opener.

Look, Chiles is going to take some time to grow into his role as a full-time starter, so patience is key. The Spartans do have a special player here and it's going to come with growing pains. We saw that on Friday night in his first-ever game at Michigan State.

Remember Connor Cook's first two starts? They were horrendous and people were calling for Tyler O'Connor to replace him. But look how his career panned out.

Patience, Spartan fans.
