Michigan State football misses on 4-star OT, but I wouldn't lose all hope yet

Friday was decision day for one of Michigan State football's top targets in the 2025 class, and unfortunately it did not go the Spartans' way.

Four-star offensive tackle Avery Gach announced his commitment to Michigan, choosing the Wolverines over Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin.

Gach's commitment to Michigan was not a surprise as the Wolverines held all of the crystal ball predictions on 247Sports for quite some time, but it is still tough to see Michigan State lose a recruitment for a top 200 kid from Michigan.

But even with this announcement today, I still wouldn't say that Jonathan Smith and Michigan State are completely out of Gach's recruitment.

Gach took a recent visit to East Lansing, and on that visit he said he intends to make another unofficial visit as well as an official visit to Michigan State this summer. Sure there is a chance that is no longer true, but I have not seen anything contrary to this since his commitment, so those visits could still occur.

Also in Michigan State's favor is that both of Gach's parents are graduates from MSU. That clearly hasn't mattered to Gach thus far, but who's to say that it won't matter to him in the future?

Recruiting nowadays is impossible to predict. Ever since NIL and the transfer portal became a thing in college athletics, recruiting has been an insane rollercoaster to follow. I say that to make the point that crazier things have happened before than Gach potentially switching his commitment from Michigan to Michigan State. There's obviously no guarantee this happens, but I wouldn't say there's a zero percent chance it happens either.
