One of the things I always love to watch during the offseason is how Michigan State football's commits move in the recruiting rankings. Whether they fall in the rankings or move up, it's interesting to see how the experts view the incoming Spartans compared to their peers.

Recently, Rivals released an update to its rankings, specifically the top 250 players in those rankings. Michigan State may only have one committed player who's inside their top 250, but that player saw their ranking improve on Tuesday.

The highest ranked commit in the Spartan's 2025 is defensive back LaRue Zamorano. Zamorano committed to Michigan State at the end of July which marked the first four-star commit for Jonathan Smith in this class. So he clearly was already a highly ranked recruit, but that improved even more on Tuesday with the release of these new rankings.

In Rivals' new rankings, Zamorano moved up six spots to No. 238 in the country. Now I know what you're thinking, that isn't much of a jump at all. While that may be true, recruits move down in the rankings quite often, so we should be thankful that he did not slide down or even fall outside the top 250.

Looking at the rest of this list, I counted 145 players that moved down in the rankings. This number doesn't even include the players who dropped out of the top 250 either. So adding that context shows us that an improvement of six is actually very good.

This update on Rivals for Zamorano also caused a big change in his spot in the 247Sports composite rankings. These rankings are the most resepcted in the industry because it combines all of the major recruiting sites individual rankings into one. And on this list, Zamorano saw a bigger jump from No. 487 to 474.

Hopefully Zamorano continues to trend up, because he is sitting dangerously close to the cutoff line. I also hope to see some more Spartans crack the top 250 as well to improve the overall class ranking. But at the end of the day these rankings don't mean all that much, all we can hope is that Smith is getting the right guys for the program, and I have no doubt in my mind that he is doing so.
