Michigan State basketball and Tom Izzo have been working extremely hard on the recruiting trail recently, potentially harder than ever before. The Spartans are after a couple key targets, but none are bigger and more important than the No. 1 recruit from the state of Michigan.

Izzo knows how important it is to close the borders of Michigan and keep the top talent in the state. He’s done that routinely before and he’s attempting to do it once again.

Five-star forward Trey McKenney at this point needs no introduction. The No. 1 player from Michigan and the No. 15 prospect in the country has been Michigan State’s top target all cycle.

Izzo and every member of his staff have visited McKenney all throughout the offseason, usually multiple times per week. And because of that relentless recruiting, McKenney just scheduled an official visit to Michigan State on Oct. 4.

McKenney also released his top 10 schools which includes Ohio State, Notre Dame, Creighton, Miami, Oregon UCLA, USC, Georgetown, and Michigan along with Michigan State.

Each school listed above however does not currently have an official visit scheduled with McKenney yet. Michigan, USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Creighton are the other schools with visits also scheduled. So it appears those schools, along with MSU, make up McKenney’s top seven.

It’s hard to say where Michigan State stands at this point in his recruitment. Being that he’s from Michigan and Izzo has put the full court press on him for awhile, you do have to like their chances. So it’s very likely the Spartans are near the top of McKenney’s list if not No. 1.

We likely won’t find any more information out about his recruitment until his official visits begin, but if I know anything about Izzo he’ll probably continue to recruit him hard throughout all of those visits.
