Back in January of this year, Michigan State basketball lost out on one of their top targets in the 2025 class. Jeremiah Fears, the younger brother of current Spartan Jeremy Fears Jr., announced his commitment to Illinois.

At the time this was a gut-wrenching loss because the younger Fears is just as talented as Jeremy Fears and MSU would have to play him regularly.

However, his commitment to Illinois didn’t stick as Fears decommitted from the Illini on July 1. Now just a couple weeks later, it’s being reported that Michigan State and Tom Izzo are one of the schools after Fears the hardest.

Jeremiah Fears is a four-star guard originally in the 2025 class. According to 247Sports composite rankings, he is the No. 32 player in the country as well as the No. 6 player at his position and No. 2 player from Arizona.

Michigan Statw was heavily involved in Fears initial recruitment, they were even one of his finalists before he picked Illinois. So it’s really no surprise seeing Izzo and MSU getting involved again.

According to HS Top Recruits on Twitter, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Michigan and USC have also been in recent contact with Fears, along with Michigan State.

There’s only one problem now for MSU in his recruitment, Fears wants to reclassify to the 2024 class. And as it stands today, Michigan State doesn’t have any more scholarships available for this upcoming season.

So while that could take MSU out of the running for Fears, there is always the chance they could convince him to stay in the 2025 class and join the Spartans recruiting class for next season. As of now that appears to be the only chance Michigan State has in this recruitment as the roster for this coming season is set in stone.

So in all honesty, I wouldn’t get my hopes up in this recruitment much at all. Crazier things have happened before in recruiting, but we’ll just have to patiently wait and see how this plays out.
