While everyone is beginning to count down the days to when Michigan State football returns, let’s not forget that Michigan State basketball is also right around the corner.

The upcoming season for MSU is as important as arguably ever before as the Spartans have been stacking mediocre after mediocre seasons recently. Some people across the country are even beginning to question whether Tom Izzo has lost his touch or not.

We can’t have that.

With so much unknown going into this season, it’s hard to grasp how the season will play out. However, the Torvik Top 25 was just released on Tuesday and if this is how the upcoming season plays out, I don’t think any Michigan State fans will be left complaining.

Torvik is a website that provides rankings of college basketball teams based on a wide range of analytical data. The site has quickly become one of the more respected rankings in the college basketball world and is regularly discussed in the mainstream media.

Thankfully for Michigan State, the site has the Spartans as the No. 18 team in the country heading into the preseason.

In all honesty, this ranking is extremely shocking to me. I’m not quite sure why the analytics like Michigan State so much, but I’m not here to complain about it.

Maybe it’s expecting a massive season from newcomer Frankie Fidler, which wouldn’t surprise me at all. Or maybe it’s thinking Jeremy Fears Jr. will have a substantial impact on his injury. Finally, maybe the site just really trusts Izzo. You can’t argue that logic if that’s the case.

Regardless, these rankings at the end of the day don’t mean all that much. Obviously you’d rather be included in them than not, but what’s more important is being in the rankings at the end of the season. So let’s hope Izzo and Co. are able to accomplish that this season.
