Michigan State football’s annual Spartan Dawg Con is quickly approaching, and it’s also quickly becoming one of the biggest events in Jonathan Smith’s short tenure.

Many recruits have announced they are visiting Michigan State this weekend for the event, and the MSU football program just released some of the names of former Spartan legends who will be attending as well.

And now we just found out another recruit who will be attending, and he will be one of the highest ranked recruits on campus this weekend.

Mason James is a four-star wide receiver from Norman, Okla., in the 2026 class. As I mentioned, James is one of the top recruits in the country as he comes in as the No. 171 overall player in his class according to 247Sports. James also is the No. 27 wide receiver and No. 3 player from Oklahoma as well.

James has an extremely busy weekend coming up, but is still taking the time to visit Michigan State for Spartan Dawg Con this Saturday, July 27. He will also take a few other visits surrounding his trip to East Lansing to Oklahoma, Michigan, and Tennessee.

Smith and his staff didn’t offer James that long ago, so for him to already make a trip to come check out Michigan State is very significant. Him also doing it on his own dime is meaningful as well and shows he does have genuine interest in the program.

No predictions have been made in his recruitment yet, but based on the few schools he’s also visiting this weekend we can see how difficult it will be to win. Then you have to factor that he’s a hometown kid with Oklahoma, so you have to reason the Sooners may be the favorites.

But regardless of all of that, James’ recruitment still has over a year to go, so Smith and his staff have time to work their magic. So now we just have to hope his visit on Saturday goes well and leads to more visits in the future.
