Michigan State football and Jonathan Smith have been putting in some work on the recruiting trail over the past few weeks.

They have received multiple expert predictions for a couple high school recruits, and even have a recruit with five crystal ball predictions to Michigan State with a scheduled commitment date in about two weeks.

Momentum is obviously building, and that is continuing once again with one of the best players in the country.

Tariq Hayer is a four-star safety and one of the top recruits in the country. Hailing from Washington D.C., Hayer is the No. 140 overall player and No. 12 safety in the country. He already has great size for his position, and is an overall elite athlete as well. He recently was a top 10 finisher at states in the 100 and 200 meter dash in track and field. Clearly this is someone Michigan State desperately needs on the roster.

The Spartans appear to be in great shape in Hayer's recruitment so far. He was on campus this past weekend, April 13, for his first unofficial visit to MSU. He must have loved what he saw because he immediately scheduled an official visit later this summer for June 14-16.

Maryland and Cincinnati are two schools to keep an eye on as well as they both have official visits scheduled with Hayer. Penn State and Wisconsin are also "warm" on his 247Sports profile and Hayer has taken recent visits to Auburn and Alabama.

So the competition for Hayer is plentiful, but the Spartans have to love where they stand right now. He is a recruit who can be a program-changer in East Lansing, especially at a position of serious need like safety. Michigan State will have every chance to win this recruitment, so hopefully Smith is able to knock his official visit out of the park in June.
