Brian Lewerke shares what he hopes to see during Michigan State's season opener
Not only is Michigan State’s fanbase extremely excited for the season to begin against Florida Atlantic on Friday night, but former Spartan alumni are looking forward to it as well. Over one hundred former Michigan State football players attended Jonathan Smith’s first Spartan Dawg Con recruiting event in July, and that excitement has remained as the season approaches.
One former Michigan State quarterback specifically shared his thoughts on MSU’s game against FAU and what he hopes to see, and that quarterback is Brian Lewerke.
Lewerke was a solid quarterback for Michigan State and was a three-year starter from 2017-19. So it’s no surprise to see that he’s still very interested in the program considering it hasn’t been that long since he’s graduated.
Lewerke took to Twitter Friday morning to share what he’s looking to see from the Spartans' offense, and to no one’s surprise he’s most interested in quarterback Aidan Chiles and the Spartans' offensive play-calling.
I love the first thing Lewerke shared about Chiles because he isn’t putting any unrealistic expectations on him. Chiles is still only 18 years old and starting his first game in college, so we need to keep that in mind when we set our own expectations for him.
But all Lewerke is hoping to see from Chiles is quick decision making and always knowing what to do with the ball. In a game like this against FAU, that should be good enough to win, but that will also help Chiles build some confidence in himself before a more difficult Week 2 game.
The other two things Lewerke is hoping to see has to do with offensive play calling. Lewerke said he’s hoping to see a lot of pre-snap motions to help confuse the defense. He’s also hoping to see a lot from the run game, specifically some creativity which is something we haven’t seen enough of in recent years.
I know we all have our own things we hope to see in Friday's game, but I’ll definitely be looking for these things considering Lewerke knows a lot more about what he’s talking about than I do.
