Recruiting has been at the forefront for Michigan State basketball and Tom Izzo all offseason, and when it comes to recruiting one name dominates the conversation for the Spartans.

Trey McKenney.

McKenney has easily been the top priority for Izzo and his staff in the 2025 class, and for good reason. McKenney comes in as the No. 15 player in the country and the No. 3 shooting guard according to 247Sports composite rankings. He also is the top player in the state of Michigan, so prioritizing McKenney was likely an obvious choice for Izzo and his staff.

McKenney has an upcoming official visit to Michigan State on Oct. 4. This visit will be huge in his recruitment as this will likely be when McKenney starts narrowing down his top schools.

McKenney recently spoke with 247Sports’ Travis Branham about his recruitment, and what he said about Michigan State is very encouraging to me.

"I have been talking to them pretty much all of high school so I am planning to go down there and try to build a relationship with the team."

It’s one thing to build a close relationship with the coaching staff of a school. Every recruit does that so that’s never a big deal. But it’s another thing to want to get closer with the current team and build relationships with them. That’s exactly what McKenney said he plans to do in his upcoming visit to East Lansing.

In my mind, it must be a good sign if McKenney cares about forming bonds with Michigan State’s current team already. If a recruit wasn’t that interested in a school then they wouldn’t have any desire to want to get to know the team. But that’s not the case with McKenney, his interest in Michigan State must be pretty high for him to want to get to know the current team already.

We will likely learn a lot more about his recruitment once his official visit rolls around, but we do know who Michigan State’s competition is right now. McKenney also has official visits scheduled for this fall with USC, Oregon, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Creighton.

I love Izzo’s chances in this recruitment, so let’s hope he can close the deal with McKenney later this fall.
