3 keys to victory for Michigan State football against Boston College
2. Stick with the run game
The Boston College defense will be the best Michigan State has faced so far this season. They are only giving up 13.3 points per game so far this year which is impressive considering they've faced Florida State and Missouri.
The Eagles’ defense has been especially dominant against the run as they’ve given up 85.7 yards per game on the ground which is No. 27 in the country. That could spell trouble for Michigan State as they’ve struggled to be effective on the ground at times. The number of injuries on the offensive line won’t help their case either.
But even if MSU struggles to move the ball on the ground I still think they need to keep running the ball consistently all game.
For starters, doing this will keep the Boston College defense honest. Becoming too one-dimensional only makes their life easier, so even if MSU is struggling to run the ball they have to keep at it just so Boston College has to keep respecting it.
Consistently running the ball will also create better opportunities in the passing game, especially in play action.
But most importantly is the fact that Nate Carter and Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams are both good enough to break free for a big run any play. So Michigan State needs to keep running the ball for the simple fact that either Spartan running back has the potential for a big play whenever they touch the ball.
