Spring ball started on Tuesday, and Michigan State got it started with a bang. Pat Fitzgerald hosted several key visitors from the 2027 class on Tuesday to check out spring practice and it’s already yielded some positive results.

Fitzgerald’s Twitter “Pat Signal” has gone viral within the Michigan State fanbase because any time he posts a certain video clip on his personal account, he’s teasing an imminent commitment.

Sure enough, Fitzgerald posted a couple of “Pat Signals” on Tuesday, and one of them went public with their commitment shortly after.

MIchigan State officially has its quarterback in the 2027 class.

Eli Stumpf, who may not be as highly recruited as some other quarterback targets that Fitzgerald was keeping an eye on, committed to Michigan State on Tuesday over offers from Kent State, Toledo, and Cornell.

Don’t let the offer sheet fool you, he’s a talented passer who’s ranked No. 858 in the class and he’s the nation’s 52nd-best quarterback. Obviously that ranking might be a little underwhelming for fans who were hoping for a blue-chip passer right away in the Fitzgerald era, but these are the types of players who can get the program back on track — check out where Brian Hoyer, Kirk Cousins, and Connor Cook were ranked.

Michigan State’s future QB room is intriguing

Alessio Milivojevic is entering his sophomore season with the Spartans and he’s going to be in East Lansing for at least another 1-2 years after 2026, barring a Heisman-like breakout that would have NFL teams begging him to enter the draft.

With Milivojevic back in 2027, the quarterback room will be rather intriguing with him leading the way, Leo Hannan and Kayd Coffman battling for the QB2 job, and now Stumpf coming in to redshirt. That’s an intriguing quarterback room with every single one of those guys possessing enough talent to start at some point.

Only one of them is a former four-star (Coffman), but that doesn’t mean the room isn’t going to be as talented as any that Michigan State has had since Mark Dantonio.

I really like what Fitzgerald has done with the quarterback position in retaining and adding key players.
