Michigan State has a new four-star signee in the 2026 class as Samson Gash committed to Pat Fitzgerald and the Spartans after flirting with Penn State, Alabama, and West Virginia.
There were times throughout his recruitment that fans thought he was headed to each one of the schools mentioned above, but the commit from the Jonathan Smith era decided to stay home and give Michigan State’s new head coach a real shot.
Having Courtney Hawkins probably didn’t hurt either.
On Wednesday morning, Gash announced that he would be signing with Michigan State after opting not to sign in the early period despite being committed since the summer.
His reason for choosing Michigan State over Alabama and Penn State? Well, it was a good one, and it should make fans even more excited about the future.
According to Steve Wiltfong of Rivals, Gash signed with the Spartans because he believes that Fitzgerald and Co. are going to get the program “back to the top”. It sounds like Fitzgerald has done a really good job of selling the program to recruits.

Michigan State might just be back, folks.
Playing time is there for Samson Gash
Gash should see a pretty healthy role early on in his Michigan State career. The Spartans lost Nick Marsh to the transfer portal and Omari Kelly, too, is gone. That means the Spartans’ top two receivers from last year are gone, which means that Gash could fight for snaps early on.
The four-star receiver from Detroit Catholic Central believes in the new staff, but he also knows that there’s plenty of playing time there for him to earn.
Plus, playing for one of the best receivers coaches in the game has to help. Hawkins has sent several Spartans to the NFL like Jayden Reed, Jalen Nailor, and even Keon Coleman still gives him credit for developing him. You could also add Marsh to that mix, and Kelly might just have an NFL future.
Playing for a coach who knows how to get talented receivers to the NFL, having an early opportunity to play, joining his brother, and believing in the vision of Fitzgerald and his staff are all why Gash chose Michigan State, but I like his main reason the most.
”I believe in what they are gonna do.”
