Pat Fitzgerald has his sights set on National Signing Day as well as his 2026 transfer class that’s been growing by the day. Michigan State has picked up about 30 commitments from the portal already, but there’s one player in the 2026 high school class that may have his attention above all else.

Samson Gash has been committed to Michigan State since Jonathan Smith landed him over the summer, and the fact that his brother, Caleb Gash, is on the roster has to mean something.

While his older brother could always transfer out, that connection is currently helping the Spartans, as well as the fact that Michigan State is trying to land his younger brother, Gideon Gash. If Samson remains committed to Michigan State, there’s a good chance his younger brother, a four-star defensive back, will also pick the Spartans when it’s his turn in 2027.

Keeping the Gash brothers in East Lansing is a top priority for Fitzgerald, but it’s not going to be an easy task, especially with programs like Alabama and Penn State making pushes for Samson.

Is Samson Gash really committed to Michigan State?

During the early signing period, Gash said that he would not be signing with Michigan State and instead would wait until February’s National Signing Day to make a decision.

That sounded like he was no longer committed to Michigan State, especially with rumors of Alabama, Penn State, and even West Virginia flying around. He did, however, reaffirm his commitment to the Spartans, saying that he was still verbally solid, but he would be weighing his options.

Gash’s commitment status has been in limbo ever since, but he claims to still be a Spartan commit despite heavy interest from other programs and visits planned before National Signing Day.

Michigan State fans are hopeful, but just this week, Gash gave a slightly worrisome quote regarding his commitment to the Spartans.

There’s a lot to unpack here.

First, he said that he “considers” himself a Michigan State commit — either you are or aren’t. Second, he said “right now” which gives off the impression that he might be planning to decommit in the future. And lastly, he’s still weighing all of his options after multiple conversations with Fitzgerald and over a month of deliberating with friends and family.

I still believe that Gash will end up in East Lansing, but the road to signing him hasn’t been an easy one for Fitzgerald.
