Michigan State trending heavily for 4-star OT from reigning national champ’s backyard

This is a big one for Pat Fitzgerald.

The concern regarding the lack of four-star recruits in Pat Fitzgerald’s first recruiting class at Michigan State could soon be coming to a screeching halt.

Fitzgerald and the Spartans have just one four-star in their 2027 recruiting class but they’ve had their eggs in several four-star baskets during official visit season. Unfortunately, many of those eggs have broken as top blue-chip targets have either canceled visits or committed elsewhere after or right before seeing East Lansing.

It’s been a good month but also a disappointing one for those star-gazers out there.

Fitzgerald is building a solid foundation for the future. A solid foundation also requires beef in the trenches. No program can truly turn things around without good offensive and defensive lines.

So that’s what makes the recent trend a great one for the Spartans.

According to a couple of predictions on On3, Michigan State looks to be trending heavily with four-star offensive lineman Caleb Johnson right from Indiana’s own backyard. The predictions aren’t just random either, they were made by Steve Wiltfong and Greg Smith who are two of the most connected recruiting experts in the game.

This comes at an interesting time because Smith just reported less than 24 hours ago that Indiana had a slight edge over Iowa. Now Michigan State comes out of left field and takes the lead.

Johnson is ranked the No. 213 overall recruit in the 2027 class as well as the 13th-best interior offensive lineman on 247Sports. He’d immediately be Michigan State’s top commit.

Pat Fitzgerald did tease a commitment on Friday night

Michigan State’s first-year head coach posted his now-famous “Pat Signal” on Twitter on Friday night, signaling a new commitment.

I was under the impression that it was an official visitor and considering that there were only two on campus and one was already a Spartan commit, I believed it would be unranked Logansport, Ind., offensive tackle RJ Clem. It still could very well be, but the timing of all this makes me think that Johnson gave the staff some good news on Friday night.

This would be a massive recruiting win for the Spartans who were seemingly behind Iowa and Indiana for the 6-foot-5, 275-pound lineman from Noblesville, Ind.

New offensive line coach Nick Tabacca has been an impressive recruiter thus far, landing two starting-caliber linemen in the transfer portal, convincing Conner Moore and Rustin Young to stay, and now potentially picking up a commitment from a four-star offensive lineman from the reigning national champion’s own backyard.

We’ll see if this potential commitment comes to fruition.
