Michigan State has been heating up a bit on the recruiting trail, but Pat Fitzgerald is making a killing with three-stars and more under-the-radar prospects.
Unfortunately, some of those higher-rated targets are being picked off by other programs.
One of those higher-rated targets just committed to another program despite being a Michigan State legacy recruit and having two brothers on the 2026 roster. He was also considered a Spartan lean at one point, but now he’s headed down south.
Four-star defensive back Gideon Gash was just in East Lansing last weekend but he’s in Lubbock this weekend visiting Texas Tech. He also wasted little time committing to the Red Raiders on his visit.

Gash was arguably the top target on the board for Fitzgerald and Co., but he couldn’t turn down whatever Texas Tech offered him on his visit. Playing time, huge NIL deals, and a chance to compete for a Big 12 title were all likely thrown his way and that Texas oil money is no joke — assuming an NIL deal sold him on the visit.
This is especially a tough loss for Michigan State because it felt like the Spartans were finally getting back into the race for him by getting a surprise visit on May 29. Also because Samson Gash and Caleb Gash are already on the roster so landing Gideon was almost an expectation.
Now that the youngest Gash brother has committed elsewhere, Fitzgerald can focus his efforts on closing on some other top targets in the 2027 class.
Missing on the nation’s No. 70 recruit who’s a top legacy target and who just visited hurts.
No, the sky’s not falling on Michigan State
People are going to panic because of this recruiting miss, but it’s not worth it at this point in the offseason and in the tenure of Fitzgerald. He’s still trying to turn the program completely around from being irrelevant to at least being a bowl team followed by eventual playoff contention.
We’re currently in phase one of this process.
Michigan State is going to need to prove some things on the field before it can land commitments from top-100 kids on the regular, although you’d think the Spartans’ NIL fund would help matters.
Fitzgerald still had a strong weekend with a few commitments after a good first official visit slate last week where he landed two commitments. Landing five in the span of seven days isn’t too bad.
Let the new head coach prove himself on the field before we judge his recruiting hits and misses.
