Caleb Gash, Samson Gash, and Gideon Gash. That was the vision that was sold to four-star wide receiver Samson Gash by Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald before he ultimately signed with the Spartans over Alabama and Penn State.

And that’s the same vision that’s being sold to the youngest of the three Gash brothers. Gideon, however, has taken a page out of his slightly older brother’s book.

Like Samson did at the end of the Jonathan Smith era and when Fitzgerald took over, Gideon is playing hard to get.

Unfortunately, it’s not clear if he’s actually playing hard to get for Fitzgerald and the Spartans or if he’s actually considering removing the Spartans from contention.

On Wednesday, three official visits for Gash were reported: Texas Tech (June 5), Oklahoma (June 12), and Alabama (June 19). That leaves really 1-2 weekends where he could actually visit Michigan State but it’s looking like the Spartans are in trouble. It turns out, even when you land a recruit’s older brother with his oldest brother already on the roster, there are no certainties in recruiting.

This obviously doesn’t rule out the Spartans but it puts them at a disadvantage until the staff could potentially get him on campus in the fall for a game weekend.

Gideon is familiar with Michigan State and he might just be waiting to see how Samson likes the new coaching staff before making the decision to visit, but it’s not a great look that the Spartans aren’t receiving one of his first official visits this summer. And remember, there’s a non-zero chance he could commit on any one of these visits.

Fitzgerald is facing an uphill battle.

Samson Gash may be the key to this recruitment

I had a feeling that Samson’s first season at Michigan State would play a large role in Gideon’s recruitment, but I didn’t quite expect it to be this important.

The youngest Gash has put off a potential Michigan State official to check out a couple of SEC schools and one of the richest programs (Texas Tech) in the country. Maybe he’s just trying to forge his own path or maybe he’s just trying to enjoy his recruitment so people don’t just expect that he’s going to be a Spartan.

Recruits like to have their moment and none of them like being tabbed as a “lean” so early in their recruitments. A big year from his older brother in East Lansing could lock up the final piece of the Gash trio.

Nothing is a done deal until the NLI is signed in December.
