Michigan State reportedly a school to watch for in-state 5-star QB

This would easily be the biggest win of the Pat Fitzgerald era.

Michigan State picked up a big in-state commitment from Don Spillers on Monday evening, landing the Detroit King star over Illinois. This marked Pat Fitzgerald’s third top-14 in-state commitment.

Although landing three of the top 14 recruits in the state isn’t exactly deserving of “home run” status, Fitzgerald is doing a really solid job in Michigan in his first full cycle. He has just three in-state commits right now, but there are a few more that could really boost the 2027 class.

Winning in 2026 is important not just for the 2027 class, but 2028 as well. The Spartans have a solid haul of in-state targets in 2027, but the 2028 cycle is absolutely loaded in Michigan.

Right near the top is five-star quarterback Donald Tabron II. The Detroit Cass Tech star is the No. 31 recruit in the nation for 2028 and he’s Michigan’s third-best recruit. That’s right, a five-star and the No. 3 quarterback in the entire country is just the No. 3 in-state recruit.

And Fitzgerald wants him.

Tabron II is returning the interest according to recruiting expert Tom Loy. He said that Michigan State is a program to keep an eye on with Tabron.

It’s not often that you hear about five-stars showing real interest in Michigan State, but with the right staff in place, there’s no reason that the Spartans can’t be a legit threat to land recruits like Tabron. He feels like he could be a program-changer. That’s something that Michigan State desperately needs.

With two more years of Alessio Milivojevic, I would love to see a Kayd Coffman vs. Eli Stumpf vs. Donald Tabron II quarterback battle in 2028. The interest is there.

Michigan State would be battling a who’s who of elite teams for Tabron

Tabron may just be entering his junior year in high school, but according to 247Sports, he holds over 30 scholarship offers already.

Pretty much everyone wants a piece of the next five-star quarterback to come out of Michigan. The last one (Dante Moore) isn’t doing too bad with Oregon these days. Tabron holds offers from Auburn, Illinois, Indiana, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA, and Wisconsin. Like I said, just about every top program wants a piece of Tabron.

Fitzgerald is developing a strong relationship with the five-star from Detroit and it might just become one of the biggest recruiting dominoes to fall in over a decade if all goes as planned.
