As a quarterback pledge, your job is to welcome your future teammates to the recruiting class when they commit. Being a leader is step No. 1 in proving that you’re to be trusted as the future QB1.
Eli Stumpf has taken it upon himself to welcome his future teammates to Michigan State’s 2027 class and the three-star commit is doing it in an unexpected way. I haven’t paid close attention to his Twitter account when the rest of his future teammates committed, but he only gave his verbal pledge to Pat Fitzgerald in March.
Maybe we can expect a little more “welcome to the team” trolls by Stumpf because his post after the Spartans landed three-star defensive end Jack Schuler was pretty funny.
Stumpf welcomed his new defensive end teammate with a picture of Schuler on the ground after what looks like an attempted sack where he pulled the quarterback’s helmet off.

“I guess we can be teammates” is a hilarious way to welcome a new recruit to the class, but it looks like the two are friends or at least familiar enough to make this joke.
Schuler becomes the third Michigan State commit in the class from the state of Ohio, following Stumpf and Savior Owens. These are three talented, yet under-the-radar, players who are going to help build the foundation for Fitzgerald’s first class. Having them build a rapport like this off the field is going to be huge for team chemistry when they get to Michigan State.
Michigan State is building a Midwest class
When Fitzgerald took over, he talked about wanting to recruit the Midwest and follow the blueprint for what made Michigan State successful in the past under Mark Dantonio.
So far, he’s holding true to his word.
Out of the seven commits in Michigan State’s 2027 class, six of them are from the Midwest. Jack Carloson and Grant Adloff are both from Michigan, Ohimai Ozolua is from Chicago, and Stumpf, Owens, and Schuler are from Ohio. These are the types of classes that saw so much success in the Dantonio era, and I love the way Fitzgerald is building.
I don’t think you’re going to find a single Michigan State fan who’s upset about building a roster through the Midwest, especially when you can still land some four-stars.
Fitzgerald is following the Dantonio blueprint.
