I think Michigan State fans are really going to like Pat Fitzgerald.
Not only does he bring the right attitude back to the program after a couple of years of vanilla football (no offense to Jonathan Smith) but he also seems to have that hate for Michigan that we all expect from our head coach. Fitzgerald even addressed Michigan in his introductory presser. Smith didn’t understand the rivalry quite like Fitzgerald does.
On Thursday night, he was responsible for a fun rivalry storyline, offering a recently decommitted-from-Michigan four-star quarterback.
While I doubt he had the rivalry in mind when he decided to offer him, going after an elite quarterback that just decommitted from Michigan two days earlier is great for narrative pushing.
After a great talk with @coachfitz51 I’m fired up to say @MSU_Football offered!!!! @M2_QBacademy @CoachJeffMoore @speedcoachDB @TomLoy247 @BrianDohn247 @SWiltfong_ @adamgorney pic.twitter.com/DLGWWX5IdA

This offer is much more than a rivalry storyline though. Peter Bourque is one of the best quarterbacks in the country (No. 85 recruit in the country) and this offer shows that Fitzgerald is serious about going after some big fish and not just overlooked recruits from the Midwest. This is the kind of offer we saw in the Mel Tucker era, but unfortunately the Spartans finished “second” almost every time. We’ll see if Fitz has better luck.
Fitzgerald is already setting up a board of elite options at quarterback.
It’s hard not to like Pat Fitzgerald’s QB offers
This offer to Bourque isn’t that surprising when you consider who Fitzgerald has already targeted at the position in the 2027 class.
Bourque is a big-time offer, but Fitzgerald is going after top-25 prospect Israel Abrams and several other talented quarterbacks. A top two of Bourque and Abrams is about as good as you can ask for at this point in the 2027 class, especially when you consider how tough it is to sell Michigan State to elite recruits after the past four seasons.
It would be nice to see Michigan State win one of these recruitments.
