Michigan State misses out on top OT target who just officially visited

Michigan State can cross another name off its 2027 class target list.

A week after getting a visit from a top offensive tackle target from Logansport, Ind., he has committed to a rising ACC program led by a second-year head coach.

RJ Clem, an unranked offensive tackle from the Midwest, was just on campus last weekend and Pat Fitzgerald had to feel good about where he stood with one of his remaining offensive line targets but he had one final official visit to Wake Forest this weekend.

That was enough to sway him to commit to Jake Dickert and the Demon Deacons.

It was essentially a battle between Wake Forest and Michigan State which were the two Power Four teams that he scheduled official visits with, but the Demon Deacons must have made him a bigger priority. Michigan State just landed four-star offensive lineman Caleb Johnson from Indiana last week so Clem would have been a much-needed depth piece.

Clem would have been Michigan State’s fourth offensive line commit, following Johnson, Grant Adloff, and Jack Carlson, but I wouldn’t be shocked if Fitzgerald and Nick Tabacca were saving their two final offensive line spots for a couple of coveted Midwest targets.

The Spartans already have a really strong offensive line group but there are two other prospects who could put the 2027 unit over the top.

Michigan State’s final OL targets in 2027 should be obvious

Missing on Clem isn’t a cause for concern, in the least, especially because Michigan State still has two offensive line targets left and both could boost the class into the top 40.

I’m going to assume that Michigan State has 5-10 spots left in the class, and at least 20 percent of them are going to be on the offensive line if all goes as planned.

The first is Detroit-based offensive lineman Jameer Henry. The Detroit King star is ranked the No. 583 prospect in the country and he’s the No. 10 recruit from the state of Michigan. He’s projected as an interior offensive lineman so he’d complement the class really well.

The second target is high-three-star Corey Laga from Lemont, Ill., who is ranked the No. 451 recruit in the 2027 class and the No. 45 offensive tackle. He’s being pursued by Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, too. Vanderbilt hosted Laga on June 12 which was a week after he was in East Lansing and he didn’t commit to the Commodores so Michigan State should feel pretty good.

If Michigan State can land both, this could be the best offensive line recruiting class in years. Hope is starting to return to the position.
