Recruiting has taken center stage in college football thanks to the end of spring ball and the fact that we don’t have any live action for another four months. Michigan State fans will take what they can get after four straight years of futility, so if recruiting hype gets us through the summer, so be it.

So far, Pat Fitzgerald is doing a pretty good of taking our minds off of the offseason with recruiting seeing an uptick since the end of spring ball two weeks ago.

About two hours after Fitzgerald’s first Spring Showcase in East Lansing, he landed a transfer commitment from a receiver who’s sure to provide some depth to the position. This is also a position group that I believe will be one of the best on the team and is going to surprise a lot of people.

A week after landing a transfer receiver, Fitzgerald and defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III won their first major recruiting battle in 2027. The staff picked up a commitment from four-star defensive lineman Ohimai Ozolua from Chicago, beating out Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee, Penn State, and Miami.

Fast forward to this week and Michigan State has stopped in to visit multiple four-star defensive linemen, it’s made the top eight for a four-star offensive tackle, and now it’s in the top five for a four-star coveted in-state tight end from Detroit Country Day.

Michigan State makes the cut for Anthony Cartwright

On Thursday, the Spartans made a loaded top five for one of the most sought-after in-state prospects.

Anthony Cartwright is a legacy recruit whose dad played basketball for Michigan State decades ago. He’s now one of the top tight ends in the country and the No. 8 recruit in the state.

Cartwright is listed as the nation’s No. 20 tight end and he’s ranked No. 389 overall by 247Sports. He had over three dozen official offers before cutting his list to five, and there were some surprising omissions, but Michigan State fans are just happy to be here after the four years of futility that they’ve experienced on the gridiron.

Ohio State figured to be high on his list, but Cartwright cut them and made room for LSU and Michigan State to go along with Miami, Michigan, and Oregon who’ve all been high on his list for a while.

Cartwright also held offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Nebraska, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USC, Washington, and Wisconsin, among dozens of others.

Winning a recruiting battle like this won’t be a cakewalk, but Fitzgerald did it a week ago.
