Michigan State loses 4-star DL target to SEC program after canceling visit

Back to the drawing board for Pat Fitzgerald.

This first official visit weekend of the Pat Fitzgerald era was supposed to be a huge one for Michigan State’s defensive line but he had three official visitors cancel their trips.

All three were defensive linemen.

And now two of them have committed to other programs since cancelling their Michigan State trips.

On Saturday evening, four-star defensive line target Marvin Nguetsop from Oakdale, Conn., committed to Ole Miss while on his official visit to Oxford. The Spartans were assumed to be out of the running when he cancelled his Michigan State trip for Ole Miss, and now it’s official.

Winston DeLattiboudere III and Fitzgerald can cross this one off the list. He was looking like a long-shot to begin with, but after locking in one of his first official visits, the Spartans had an outside shot. He then became the third Spartan defensive line target to cancel his visit, joining Myles Smith and Nehemiah Ombati. Smith has since committed to Indiana and Ombati looks Missouri-bound.

This is an unfortunate turn of events, but Fitzgerald was prepared. He still hosted four-star defensive line target Reinaldo Perez this weekend and he’s in a good spot with him. Next weekend, four-star defensive line commit Ohimai Ozolua will be on campus.

Michigan State is still in relatively good shape on the defensive line. The Spartans will need to land another one of these top targets, though.

Michigan State could use some good news soon

After missing out on the No. 223 recruit in college football, the Spartans have now unfortunately watched two top defensive line targets commit elsewhere after cancelling visits and a third is leaning toward an SEC program. While the Spartans will be fine, good news would be nice.

The first official visit weekend has been relatively quiet thus far. We do have to remember that this isn’t the Mel Tucker era so we’re not going to see Lambos on the field or recruits taking pictures with actual goats. This is Fitzgerald and things are going to be much more lowkey.

There are some top targets on campus who could have the Spartans on commit watch, though.

We haven’t seen a “Pat Signal” posted on Twitter yet so that means no commitment yet, but I fully expect him to seal the deal with at least a couple of guys from this first visit weekend.

A Perez commitment would more than make up for these three defensive line misses.
