Anyone who’s watched Michigan State football over the past few years knows that there are a couple of positions that have been falling behind the rest of the Big Ten.
The trenches have been wildly disappointing over the past few seasons and that has a lot to do with the lackluster recruiting in the latter stages of the Mel Tucker era and during Jonathan Smith tenure. The offensive and defensive lines have been falling short and that’s a trend that desperately needs to end if Michigan State is going to compete under Pat Fitzgerald.
Fortunately, the new head coach is addressing those needs.
Fitzgerald and Winston DeLattiboudere III have been working hard on addressing needs along the defensive line. After losing Jalen Thompson and Alex VanSumeren this offseason, it’s important for the staff to start building toward the future.
That means the 2027 class is critical and in-state prospects need to top the list.
Fitzgerald is in the mix for two of the top three defensive linemen in the state of Michigan in the upcoming class which shows that this staff is working overtime to improve that unit.

Take this ranking with a grain of salt because Myles Smith just canceled his Michigan State visit and replaced it with Oklahoma, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t reschedule. If he plans on committing this summer, that could eliminate the Spartans, but the staff has been targeting the four-star defensive end from Farmington, Mich., since Fitzgerald was hired.
Drew Aagesen is a newer target and he is a self-admitted Spartan fan since he was a kid so that should make Fitzgerald’s job easier. It’s possible that he’s being recruited as an offensive lineman, but he clearly has enough versatility to be one of the top three defensive linemen in the state.
Fitzgerald could address the defensive line needs right in his own backyard.
Michigan State has plenty of options on the defensive line
Fitzgerald and DeLattiboudere III have been aiming high along the defensive line and they’re about to host a handful of top targets in the 2027 class over the next month.
The Spartans are in the mix for four-stars Marvin Nguetsop, Reinaldo Perez, and Nehemiah Ombati along with four-star defensive lineman commit Ohimai Ozolua. The options are there, but Fitzgerald just has to find a way to close. If Aagesen is projected as a defensive lineman at the next level, he could be thrown into the mix.
Michigan State will have options and it’s refreshing to see so many four-star defensive lineman prospects considering the Spartans. Fitzgerald is doing a great job of selling the program.
A strong defensive line can go a long way.
