The 2027 recruiting class is about to start taking shape over the next two months as official visits get underway and Michigan State identifies more top targets to host.
Recruiting well in the state of Michigan will be important for Pat Fitzgerald and the Spartans, especially with the 2027 class being as loaded as it is. There are some big-time names in the state up for grabs and Fitzgerald is in a good spot with several of them.
Top in-state prospects like Myles Smith and Anthony Cartwright have planned official visits over the next month, but there’s one guy who Michigan State fans are praying to land.
Gideon Gash.
The top-100 recruit from Detroit Catholic Central is a legacy with two brothers on the roster for 2026. His oldest brother, Caleb, has been in the program for years and his middle brother, Samson, just committed to Michigan State in the 2026 class after a fight until National Signing Day where Fitzgerald held off Alabama, Georgia, Penn State, and West Virginia.
The battle for Gideon is going to be every bit as tough for Fitzgerald, but there’s been a huge update in his recruitment that plays into Michigan State’s favor.
Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and safeties coach James Adams stopped in to see Gash on Tuesday morning and according to Kenny Jordan, he’s in the process of setting up an official visit to East Lansing.

Getting Gash on campus will be huge because he’s planning on making a mid-summer decision. If Michigan State wants to beat out Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech for the youngest — and highest-ranked — Gash brother, it’ll need to get him on campus for an official visit.
When that happens, I think this recruitment is Michigan State’s to lose.
Gideon Gash should be priority No. 1 for Michigan State
While there are several top in-state recruits in the 2027 class that I would like to see Michigan State land (Smith and Cartwright are near the top of my list), Gash has to be No. 1.
Gash is ranked the No. 70 recruit in the country and he’s the No. 2 prospect from the state of Michigan, per 247Sports. He holds almost three dozen offers and he’s being courted by some of the biggest — and richest — programs in college football. This is going to be a battle, but Fitzgerald has to like his chances.
You can’t fault a recruit for wanting to carve his own path in order to avoid the “lock” or “lean” tab that was given to him when his brothers chose Michigan State. He’s enjoying the recruiting process, but I think he comes home in the end.
Michigan State needs some defensive back help and Gash could play early on given the Spartans’ depth chart in the defensive backfield.
Early playing time, staying home, playing with your brothers, and getting a decent NIL deal should be enough to keep him home but Fitzgerald is going to have to battle until signing day.
He’s done this before.
