There aren’t many coaches who work as hard as Pat Fitzgerald, and that goes all the way back to his days at Northwestern. The new Michigan State head coach was known for being hard working considering he took a program like Northwestern and made it relevant in the college football landscape.
This is not to say that Mel Tucker and Jonathan Smith weren’t hard-working, but Fitzgerald brings a type of passion that’s been missing in East Lansing ever since Mark Dantonio retired.
That passion and charisma has led to him signing a solid transfer class that may not be ranked highly but it has several key players that the Spartans are going to rely heavily upon this season.
It’s also helping him in the 2027 class.
So far, Fitzgerald has landed two 2027 commits in the form of three-star running back Savior Owens from Ohio and three-star in-state interior offensive lineman Grant Adloff.
He could be close to landing another coveted recruiting target.
Michigan State trending for a coveted WR target
Fitzgerald has proven to be a solid recruiter thus far, and all he’s selling these high school and transfer players is hope and history. Michigan State has been bad for years, so he has to hope that Michigan State’s history of success under Dantonio helps bring in some key recruits.
The first-year coach’s success as Northwestern’s coach should help, too.
It may be helping with one key Illinois-based recruit who’s wanted by the likes of Indiana, Kansas State, Kentucky, and Maryland. When college football’s national champion wants you to join its program, you know that you’re a pretty talented and coveted prospect.
Ronnie Gomiller is trending with unranked receiver Ronnie Gomiller from Illinois, according to Justin Thind of 247Sports. The Michigan State insider put in a crystal ball for the Spartans to land the currently unranked receiver who’s sure to skyrocket up the rankings when he is finally given one — he has some impressive offers.
Gomiller is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound athlete from East St. Louis, Ill., who is going to probably project as a gadget guy with that size.
It would be nice to see the Spartans win a recruiting battle over the reigning national champs.
