Jonathan Smith has been prepping for Michigan State football's season opener this week, but he still has his sights set on the recruiting landscape.

It feels like I see a new crop of players getting game invites every day on social media, and on Sunday, the Spartans extended an offer to one of the fastest risers in the 2027 class.

Michigan State extended an offer to 2027 three-star edge rusher Troy Mailo on Sunday.

Mailo is one of the notable risers in the 2027 class this summer, earning offers from the likes of Kansas State, Utah, Oklahoma, Arizona State, and Michigan since the start of May. That was right after Lance Leipold and Kansas offered him on April 30.

The Spartans are getting into the mix for a guy that will probably finish much higher than his current ranking. He's listed as the No. 466 overall prospect in the class and he's also the No. 40 edge rusher and No. 2 recruit from the state of Colorado, per the 247Sports Composite. He has 14 offers at this point in his recruitment, but I'd expect that to double by the time next summer rolls around.

Michigan State has been recruiting much better since the start of the summer and Smith is hoping that carries over in the 2027 class. He's gotten the 2026 group up to No. 32 nationally after a slow start and the same could happen this cycle, especially if the Spartans are to exceed expectations this season.

The 2027 class should heat up soon.
