Jonathan Smith and Michigan State football are off to a strong start to the 2025 season.

The Spartans are 2-0 to begin the year following a thrilling 42-40 double-overtime win over Boston College in Week 2. The win over the Eagles was big for the team's confidence and can have the opposite effect on the 2025 season compared to what a loss to Boston College did in 2024.

After losing to Boston College last year, the team seemed to lose steam.

Winning cures everything, and that's beginning to show in recruiting as well as on the field. The Spartans are gaining more confidence, and recruiting is perking up a bit.

In fact, Michigan State "continues to impress" five-star in-state quarterback Donald Tabron II, according to Steve Wiltfong of On3/Rivals.

Tabron II is a five-star quarterback in the 2028 class from Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech. He's also the fifth-best quarterback in the country and third-best recruit from the state of Michigan.

It's still early in the process, but it sounds like he likes what he's been seeing from MSU.

"You can really see the structure in place, both on and off the field, and that stands out to me every time I’m there," Tabron told Wiltfong.

During the Mel Tucker days, you didn't often hear anything about structure or the program looking to be in great shape when recruits visited. He would often host five-stars who loved being pictured on the field with goats and cool cars, but Smith seems to be taking a more modest approach, and it's working more now that on-field results are showing up.

Tabron is still a couple of cycles away, but making a strong early impression on the five-star from Detroit is going to pay dividends when the 2028 class rolls around.
