Michigan State landed a new commitment earlier this week in the form of three-star athlete Don Spillers from Detroit. He picked Pat Fitzgerald and the Spartans over Bret Bielema and Illinois, giving Michigan State another nice Big Ten recruiting win.
Fitzgerald is sort of piling those Big Ten recruiting wins up. He won his first real Big Ten recruiting battle when he was able to hold off Penn State for Samson Gash in the 2026 class, he poached Rhys Dakin and Jaziun Patterson from Iowa, got Fredrick Moore from Michigan, and he just beat out Indiana and the Hawkeyes for four-star offensive lineman Caleb Johnson.
Spillers became the latest conference recruiting victory for Michigan State’s new head coach and he’s already willing to do some recruiting of his own.
According to a Jason Killop quote from Spillers, he’s vowing to “recruit the (expletive) out of Detroit”.

Michigan State fans are going to love this.
Detroit has produced some elite talent over the past couple of decades, and beyond, and to have success at Michigan State, it’s important to land some of the best players from the city. Mark Dantonio landed some really good players from Detroit who helped build Michigan State into a national powerhouse and Fitzgerald now needs to do the same — including metro Detroit.
He’s going to get some help from his new three-star safety commit.
Don Spillers should have some targets already in mind
Spillers is the Spartans’ first Detroit commit of the class but there are others still on the board for Fitzgerald and Co. that the King safety can work on.
The first name that comes to mind when thinking about Detroit prospects is Jameer Henry. The high-three-star offensive lineman happens to be Detroit King teammates with Spillers. That would make the most sense out of any of the remaining in-state targets, but four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright from Detroit Country Day should be another one.
Maybe he could also work on trying to flip Gideon Gash from Texas Tech and that insane oil money they have (good luck) and three-star Cincinnati receiver commit Chad Willis.
Why stop there?
Spillers could help with the 2028 class a little early on with Jayden Bell from Brother Rice, and Donald Tabron, Antijuan Wilkes, Mylan Griggs, and LaMarcus Army from Detroit Cass Tech. It’s still super early, but he could infiltrate his rivals over at Cass Tech and convince a couple of them to become Spartans.
Fans should love how active Spillers wants to be on the recruiting trail in Detroit.
