Michigan State has had a pretty good weekend on the recruiting trail, landing its No. 1-ranked recruit in the 2027 class over the reigning national champs.
The four-star offensive tackle picked Michigan State over Indiana and Iowa in somewhat of a surprise move. The commitment was the Spartans’ third along the offensive line with Jack Carlson and Grant Adloff, making this one of the most complete classes in the trenches in some time. This honestly feels like a prototypical Mark Dantonio offensive line class.
One position group that Pat Fitzgerald has had some bad luck with in the 2027 class has been the receiving corps. The Spartans have missed on a few priority targets to Big 12 and Big Ten programs which has been rather disappointing considering Courtney Hawkins is a great coach.
Hawkins did land Zach Forbish after a June 5 visit and he jumped to the top-900 nationally after committing as an unranked wideout.
And now he’s close to adding another top wide receiver target.
Michigan State is a finalist for one of the top in-state receivers in the 2027 class. Don Spillers III is committing on Monday afternoon, choosing between Michigan State and Illinois.

Spillers took a visit to Michigan State on May 29 and then saw Illinois a week later. Louisville was always in the mix, but they’ve apparently fallen out, making this a final two with a Monday afternoon announcement at Detroit King.
The three-star receiver from Detroit also holds offers from Michigan, Maryland, Missouri, Pitt, and Purdue. This would be a nice win for Hawkins, giving him a solid two-man class.
Spillers is ranked the nation’s No. 878 recruit and No. 14 prospect from the state of Michigan.
Don Spillers could cap Michigan State’s 2027 WR class
Adding Spillers to the 2027 class could cap off Michigan State’s receiver haul, at least at the high school level. The Spartans could obviously add some transfer wideouts next offseason, but the high school class could end with two guys.
That could also be a reason why guys like Ronnie Gomiller and Arnold Mugerwa and Isaiah Alvarez either canceled visits or committed elsewhere after seeing Michigan State.
Spillers could help open a door for Fitzgerald at Detroit King which would be great since it’s a school that always seems to have top talent. Forbish also got the Spartans into the state of Texas and he’s one of the more underrated guys in Michigan State’s 2027 class.
There could be another wide receiver target or two pop up, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Spillers be the Spartans’ last commit at the position — assuming the Spartans do get good news on Monday.
