Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball received some good news regarding four-star shooting guard Jasiah Jervis earlier this week when he trimmed his list.

The top-40 shooting guard from New York announced his five finalists as well as a decision date of Nov. 5. The finalists were Michigan State, Pitt, NC State, Tennessee, and Illinois. For a Hall of Fame coach like Tom Izzo, this is a winnable top five, especially since he’s put in the most work with Jervis, making him feel like the No. 1 priority in East Lansing.

Which he is.

Izzo hosted Jervis for an official in early September for Grind Week along with four-star point guard commit Carlos Medlock Jr. He then took a few trips to check in on him.

The Hall of Fame coach has seen him a handful of times over the past 1.5 months, and it’s likely only improved the Spartans’ chances to land him. It’s been rumored that Michigan State is in the lead for him ahead of two final official visits before a decision. He was supposed to be at Illinois this weekend for one of those two officials, but a positive development for Michigan State ensued.

On Friday, it was reported that Jervis canceled his Illinois visit and the Illini are officially out of the running for the talented shooting guard.

With Illinois eliminated, that means Tennessee stands in the way of Michigan State’s rumored lead heading into decision day. As of right now, the Vols will host him next weekend.

There’s still a chance that could get canceled, too.

Right now, however, it looks like Michigan State is in the lead heading into that final official, but you can’t count out programs like NC State and Tennessee.

Huge development for Michigan State, but there’s still a lot that could happen before Nov. 5.
