Michigan State basketball got some good news two weeks ago when Julius Avent committed to the Spartans, and then Tom Izzo hosted a key five-star center target a week later, along with four-star point guard commit Carlos Medlock Jr. and four-star forward Kalyn Collingwood.
The center target that was just on campus with Medlock is none other than Ethan Taylor, a five-star big man from Link Academy (where he’s teammates with Medlock).
By all accounts, Michigan State is going all-in on Taylor to be the priority center target in the Spartans’ 2026 class. There are some other options at center like Tristan Reed and Maxime Meyer, but the Spartans may have gotten another positive development in the recruitment of Taylor.
I say “another” because Taylor just announced after his Michigan State official that he would no longer be taking a trip to Lexington to check out Kentucky this weekend. He removed Kentucky from his list of options. That was a great development for the Spartans.
There may be another positive development in the form of another center target canceling his visit to East Lansing this weekend.
Meyer no longer visiting MSU this weekend.

I personally take that as a good sign with either Taylor or Reed (likely Taylor).
While it might just mean Meyer is removing the Spartans from his list, it is likely a two-way street. Usually you don’t see a recruit cancel a visit unless he has his mind made up or the coaching staff from that school is telling him that he shouldn’t waste his time. It feels like the staff has a good feeling on where it stands with Taylor, so eliminating Meyer from the big board could have been strategy.
Does this mean Taylor is a done deal? No, not at all. The five-star big man is still weighing his options, although the fact that he canceled his final visit should mean that he’s closing in on a decision.
Just going off of what I hear and reading some tea leaves of my own, this feels like a good sign for the Spartans in the recruitment of Taylor.
Then again, recruiting is fluid and nothing surprises me anymore.
