One of the oldest commitment tricks in the book is the fake hat grab, and it almost always rubs opposing fans the wrong way when their school isn’t picked. Fortunately, Michigan State fans were on the winning end of a fake hat grab on Wednesday with Jasiah Jervis.

The four-star shooting guard narrowed his list down to four schools and each had a hat on the table for his streamed announcement.

As he was getting set to announce, he reached for the NC State hat on the table, looked at it, and said “nah” with a laugh. He repeated that, going to the Pitt hat, then the Michigan State hat, and then he picked up the Tennessee hat last, looked at it for a second, and then put it down before opening his jacket to reveal a “Spartans” shirt.

To say that Michigan State fans were slightly nervous when he put the Spartan hat back down after picking it up would be an understatement — but I’m going to assume Pitt, NC State, and Tennessee fans didn’t love the fake hat move.

You can laugh it off when you’re on the right side of one of these, but if he had picked Pitt, NC State, or Tennessee, you just know Michigan State fans would be having an absolute meltdown, and for good reason. No one wants to be the center of a recruiting troll.

Tom Izzo had to be thrilled with the decision by Jervis because he now has his shooting guard of the future while he’s still trying to figure out that position on the 2025-26 team.

Let’s hope the next commit for Michigan State avoids the fake hat trick. One per cycle is enough.
