With the 2025 Michigan State season coming to a close on Saturday night, there are plenty of question marks surrounding the future of the program.

Will Jonathan Smith be retained and brought back for 2026? Will the Spartans opt to run another coaching search and pay a huge buyout? Will any key players transfer out?

One player who has been rumored as a transfer candidate is junior captain and quarterback Aidan Chiles. He lost his starting job a few weeks ago to redshirt freshman Alessio Milivojevic, but he’s been on the injury report each game since, so there’s some speculation that he hasn’t even been healthy enough to win his job back.

The injury is undisclosed, but he’s been spotted in a walking boot, so there’s also a chance that he just shut it down for the season and might look to either focus on winning his job back in 2026 with Michigan State or focus on finding a new home. There’s really an equal chance for either decision.

Smith did say earlier this week that he was hopeful that Chiles would be healthy enough to dress and give it a go against Maryland on Saturday night, but that hope is officially dead.

On Saturday afternoon, Michigan State released its injury report, and Chiles is listed as “out”.

Chiles was likely to be the second-string option behind a rising Milivojevic, but I had a gut feeling that Smith would give him a drive or two if he was able to suit up against Maryland. Unfortunately, we’ll never know what he would have done with his dual-threat quarterback as Chiles is listed as “out” along with Nikai Martinez, Makhi Frazier, Ade Willie, Matt Gulbin, Ben Roberts, Stanton Ramil, and Kristian Phillips who have all been starters this season.

Michigan State fans will now prepare for another full game of Milivojevic which isn’t a bad thing considering he’s been an impressive young quarterback who has exceeded expectations. He has 975 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions while completing about 63 percent of his passes this season.

It feels like he’s the future of the program, but it’ll be interesting to see what Chiles opts to do following the season finale.
