As the 2027 class fills up, Michigan State fans are beginning to look at who the next commits are and one name that many Spartans are hopeful to land is four-star in-state tight end target Anthony Cartwright.

Although he’s being pursued by some of college football’s elite programs like LSU, Miami, Michigan, and Oregon, the Spartans are in heavy pursuit because he is a legacy target. His dad played basketball for Michigan State decades ago, but he still loves Michigan State and his son knows that.

Cartwright spoke to Jason Killop of On3 on Wednesday evening and spoke about some of his finalists with official visits completed and he even announced a commitment date.

According to Killop, Cartwright will be announcing his commitment on June 28 between his five finalists: Michigan State, Michigan, Oregon, Miami, and LSU. He took his first official visit to Michigan State back on May 29 and then concluded his schedule of visits with Oregon this past weekend. Having the first or last visits usually give programs an advantage, but I’m not sure that anyone really knows where the four-star tight end from Detroit Country Day stands.

The 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end from Franklin, Mich., has been one of Pat Fitzgerald’s top targets in the 2027 class since he got to campus and Brian Wozniak has made him a priority, too.

Michigan State already has a commitment from three-star tight end Ryan Pankey, but the staff is not going to turn away a second tight end, especially if it’s in the form of the No. 408 overall recruit in the 2027 class. Cartwright is also the nation’s No. 20 tight end.

How confident should Michigan State be with Anthony Cartwright?

I’m not completely sure that Michigan State is in a favorable position with Cartwright, but you’d have to think that the Spartans are right there near the top of his board given that his dad is a Spartan and he likely grew up rooting for the green and white. That emotional attachment and “home” feeling in East Lansing may be enough to sway Cartwright.

Michigan and Oregon already have tight end commits in the 2027 class, LSU has the nation’s top tight end committed, but Miami doesn’t have a single player at the position.

I would think that eliminates LSU but Miami is worrisome because they can sell him on being the 2027 class’ only tight end. Michigan State can sell him on playing close to home for his dad’s alma mater and being a pioneer in the Spartans’ turnaround under Fitzgerald.

It’s not going to be an easy choice, but Michigan State is still in this for a reason.
