When it rains, it pours. Michigan State football is in the middle of a downpour right now, and it was made worse by the news of a decommitment on Monday.
The Spartans had 22 players committed in their 2026 class and it was ranked in the top 30 nationally, but it took quite a hit on Monday morning with the news of Tyren Wortham’s decommitment.
According to reports, the four-star receiver, and top-ranked Spartan commit in the class according to Rivals, decided to reopen his recruitment.

Honestly, this feels like the first of what could be multiple decommitments in the 2026 class, especially since three-star linebacker Braylon Hodge has been visiting other programs and throwing up the “block M” hand gesture while on Michigan’s campus.
It’s been a horrendous weekend for Jonathan Smith and the Spartans.
It all started with that Hodge visit to Michigan where he was seen repping the Wolverines with the “block M” and then Michigan State threw away a road win against Nebraska in the fourth quarter to drop to 3-2 on the year. After that, Aidan Chiles and Nick Marsh were seen getting into it on the sidelines. And now this. It’s been bad. All bad.
Michigan State is down to 21 commits now, and Samson Gash becomes the highest-ranked receiver pledge in the class. He’s still a very talented player, but having Wortham was going to put the receiver group over the top. Courtney Hawkins just can’t catch a break.
Wortham was ranked the No. 246 overall player and 40th-best receiver in the class. This is now his second decommitment as the Spartans flipped him from UCF over the summer.
