Folks, we made it. We survived the 2025 Michigan State football season, and it wasn’t easy. The Spartans began the year 3-0 with plenty of hope and a quarterback seemingly taking that next step, but have since dropped eight straight games as head coach Jonathan Smith is on the hot seat.
Aidan Chiles was looking like a vastly improved quarterback through the first month of the year, and then the bye week hit. The junior captain then took a big hit in the first quarter of the Nebraska game on the road, and just never looked the same. He eventually lost his starting job and an injury has kept him out for the past few weeks.
Chiles has been spotted in a walking boot on the sidelines with the team, but he traveled with Michigan State to Iowa just in case he was able to suit up and play.
This week, Smith said that he would like to get Chiles back to full strength so he can take the field for the Spartans in the last game of the season, but the injury report wasn’t in his favor.
On Saturday afternoon, Chiles was officially listed as “out” for the Maryland game, along with about a dozen other players, including a handful who had been starters at some point this season. The injury report could signal the end of the Chiles era in East Lansing, but he has a decision to make this offseason: does he try to win his job back or does he find a new home as QB1?
Have we seen the last of Chiles in a Michigan State uniform?
While I would love if he returned and embraced the competition next season for a (potentially) new staff, I just have a feeling that he will want to have a guaranteed starting job. I’m not saying he’s afraid of competition, but with just one season of eligibility left, he has to make a business decision. He could bet on himself and stay at Michigan State, but he risks being a backup and hurting his dwindling chances at an NFL future.
I think we have seen the last of Chiles in a Spartan uniform unfortunately.
